Is Apple News+ Worth It? The $12.99 Math

What $12.99 a month buys inside Apple News, what it does not unlock, and a five-step trial test that answers the question before the charge lands.

A slim stack of magazines with a small cream price tag beside a folded newspaper.

Is Apple News+ worth it? It is worth $12.99 a month when it replaces subscriptions you already pay for and finish, and it is not worth it when you were hoping a purchase would produce a reading habit you do not currently have. The catalog is not the deciding factor; what you already spend and what you actually complete are.

Apple lists Apple News+ at $12.99 a month after a one-month free trial for new subscribers, a price checked on Apple's own pages on 3 September 2026. What follows is what that buys, what it does not, and a five-step test you can run inside the trial.

What does the $12.99 for Apple News+ actually buy?

Five things, all of them inside the Apple News app.

Licensed articles and full magazine issues. News+ unlocks premium stories from magazines and newspapers Apple has paid to carry, plus cover-to-cover issues you can read online or download. Apple's own phrasing is "hundreds of magazines and leading local, national, and international newspapers," and that vagueness is the right level of precision to repeat. Catalog counts move; a figure from last year's review will be wrong.

Audio stories. Narrated versions of selected pieces, playable offline. Genuinely useful if you already listen, decoration if you do not.

Daily puzzles. Mini and full-size crosswords exclusive to the subscription. In some households this is the feature that keeps the subscription alive after the news habit fades.

Offline magazine issues. Full issues on the device with no connection required. This is the one thing a licensed magazine product does that no feed reader can, and it is real.

Family Sharing for up to six. One subscription, shared with up to five other people in the group. Split six ways, $12.99 is a different number. Split one way, it is $12.99.

Two adjacent prices matter to the arithmetic, both checked 3 September 2026. Apple offers three months of News+ free with the purchase of an eligible device, one offer per account. And Apple One Premier, at $39.95 a month, bundles News+ with five other Apple services. Premier is rational if you already wanted those services. It is also a quiet way to turn a $12.99 question into a $40 habit nobody reviews again.

What does Apple News+ not unlock?

It is not a skeleton key for the open web. News+ is a license to Apple's catalog. Outlets that never signed are still behind their own wall, and outlets that did sign are readable inside Apple News, which is not the same as readable everywhere.

That wall is not going away. A Reuters Institute factsheet by Felix Simon and Lucas Graves, Pay Models for Online News, studied 212 outlets and found the share of leading US newspapers running some form of online paywall rising from 60% in 2017 to 76%. That study is from 2019, so read it as the direction of travel rather than today's count. Paying Apple changes which walls you meet, not how many exist.

It does not replace a paper you actually love. If you read one newsroom several times a week and care about its app, newsletters and extras, that newsroom's own subscription is usually the better money, and it funds the desk directly.

It does not make the free app unnecessary — or sufficient. The free Apple News app is already on the phone, with an edited Top Stories. News+ adds the licensed layer. You can live in the free app indefinitely; you can also assume News+ is "the news app" and find that half of what you wanted was never in the bundle.

It does not decide the paywall for you. Metered and hard paywalls still work the way they always did outside Apple's deals: a headline, a wall, and a choice.

How do Apple News and Apple News+ differ?

Apple News is free and preinstalled. Apple News+ is the $12.99 layer inside it.

Apple News (free) Apple News+ ($12.99/mo)
Top stories chosen by editors Yes Yes
Licensed magazines and newspapers No Yes
Cover-to-cover issues, readable offline No Yes
Audio stories No Yes
Exclusive daily puzzles No Yes
Family Sharing for up to six Not applicable Yes

Prices and feature rows checked on Apple's pages, 3 September 2026.

That table is why "I need an alternative to Apple News" and "I need an alternative to Apple News+" are different sentences. If you want somewhere to see today's stories from outlets you already read for free, you have a sources problem, not a $12.99 problem. If you want cover-to-cover magazines, audio editions and papers Apple has already paid for, you have the other one.

How do you decide during the free trial?

Five steps, run inside the month, answer the question — is Apple News+ worth it at your house, this year — with arithmetic instead of impressions.

  1. Write down what you already pay for. One paper? Two magazines? Nothing? News+ is a consolidator: worth more when it removes line items, worth less beside them.
  2. Count what you finish, not what you open. A magazine flipped through once is not a subscription you needed. If you cannot name three things you used News+ for in week three, the answer is no.
  3. Price the household, not the phone. Family Sharing up to six moves the math more than any feature. Two magazine readers and one crossword solver make $12.99 cheap; one person on weeknights may not.
  4. Check Apple One only if you already wanted the rest. Premier at $39.95 a month is a bundle, not a news decision.
  5. Keep the library card in the comparison. Reading paywalled news legally still includes the public library. If your card already covers the papers you would have used News+ for, you are paying twice.

Set the cancellation reminder for two days before the trial ends, not the morning after the charge. In October 2024 the Federal Trade Commission announced its final "click-to-cancel" rule, requiring sellers to provide a simple mechanism to cancel a recurring charge and to disclose material terms before taking billing information. That is the standard to hold any trial to, including this one.

When is Apple News+ worth it, and when is it not?

Two lists settle it — is Apple News+ worth it for you, specifically — faster than any feature comparison.

Worth it when most of these are true:

  • You read magazines, not only headlines, and want them in one place.
  • You would otherwise pay for two or more of the titles Apple carries.
  • Someone else in the Family Sharing group will use it.
  • Offline issues or audio stories are how you actually read, not a feature you admired on a marketing page.
  • You keep hitting walls on specific papers, and you have confirmed those papers are in the bundle.

Not worth it when most of these are true:

  • You read a handful of free sites and bounce.
  • You already subscribe to the one outlet you care about.
  • You wanted a better news app and landed on a magazine subscription by accident.
  • The trial produced a lot of opening and very little finishing.
  • A library card already covers the stories you were paying to unlock.

Both lists are defensible, and paying is not automatically the virtuous choice — the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026 puts online news payment at 17% across the markets it tracks, so most readers answer this question with no.

What this page does not cover: which specific titles are in the catalog on any given day, non-US pricing, or student and carrier bundles. All three move faster than a page can be revised, and Apple's own listing is the only current answer.

One note on scope. GetMyNews is not a News+ competitor. It carries no licensed issues and unlocks no publisher's wall. It reads 92 public RSS feeds from 37 US newsrooms straight from the phone, with no account and no server of ours in the path, opening each story on the publisher's own page so a subscription you already hold still recognizes you. It is free, funded by a banner plus a full-screen ad about every twenty stories, and it is on Google Play for Android. There is no iPhone version, so on Apple's hardware the real comparison is between News+ and the free Apple News app. The account-first checking method is the page to read if the underlying problem is the app rather than the price.

FAQ

Does Apple News+ remove paywalls on the open web?

No. News+ unlocks what Apple has licensed, inside the Apple News app. A New York Times or regional paper article opened in a browser is governed by that publisher's own wall, subscription and metering rules, exactly as before. If your problem is walls in general rather than magazines in particular, a subscription to the one outlet you read most is usually better value.

How do you cancel Apple News+ before the trial charges you?

Cancel from the subscription settings on the device where you started it, at least a day before the trial ends, and set a calendar reminder two days out. The FTC's 2024 click-to-cancel rule requires a simple cancellation mechanism and clear disclosure of terms before billing details are taken, so a trial that hides the exit is failing a federal standard, not just annoying you.
