Privacy Policy

The short version

GetMyNews is built to keep your data on your device. There is no account to create, and no GetMyNews server that stores what you read. The personalization — learning which topics you like — happens on your phone. We do not collect, rent or sell your personal information.

The one exception, under your control, is the advertising that funds the app (Google AdMob) and the web reader (Google AdSense). Both are free and ad-supported: there is no subscription or in-app purchase. Ads are described below.

Who is responsible

What we do — and don’t — collect

No identity. We do not ask for your name, email address, phone number or a password. You can use the App without ever identifying yourself to us.

Stored on your device only. Your interests, your swipe history, saved articles and the preferences the App learns are stored locally on your phone. They are not transmitted to us, because we have no server to receive them.

The web reader, and the one relay it needs. The reader at /app/runs the same way, in your browser, with the same data kept there. It needs one thing the phone does not: a relay. A browser cannot read a newsroom’s feed directly, because publishers only allow their own sites to do so, so the feed passes through an address on this domain that fetches it and hands it back. That relay keeps no log, writes no cookie and stores nothing. Like any server it necessarily sees, for the instant of the request, which feed address was asked for and the connection it came from, and it records neither. What you swipe, what you keep and the figures on Your week never reach it: they are worked out in your browser and stay in its storage.

Articles and images come from the publisher.Opening an article, on the phone or in the browser, takes you to the newsroom’s own site, which then sees you as any visitor. Images shown on the cards are loaded from their servers for the same reason. Nothing is rewritten or summarised by us, anywhere.

System backups. So that you don’t lose your feed when you change phones, this on-device data can be included in your Android system backup (Google backup). That backup is managed by Google under its own terms and your device settings — not by us.

Advertising and your consent

The App shows an occasional full-screen ad (about one every 20 news cards) through Google AdMob; the Android version also shows a small banner above the bottom menu. To serve ads, Google and its partners may collect and use device and advertising identifiers and related data, as described in “How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services”.

On first launch we ask for your choice using Google’s consent message (UMP). If you decline, you will see non-personalized adsinstead of personalized ones — the App keeps working either way. You can change your choice at any time in your device’s advertising settings: Settings → Google → Ads on Android.

Reading articles

Tapping a story opens a GetMyNews screen showing the headline, the summary and the image supplied by the publisher’s own feed, plus the other outlets covering the same story. From there, Read the full storyopens the article on the publisher’s website in your device’s browser view (Chrome on Android) — so you get their full page, your own subscription if you have one, and your browser’s built-in “Translate” feature. We do not copy or republish the text of articles. Those news websites are operated by third parties and have their own privacy practices, which we do not control.

Advertising in the web reader

The reader at /app/ is funded the same way as the App: by advertising, through Google AdSense. An ad can appear on the screen between two decks only, never on a card, and never before you have read twenty cards. Two things follow, and they apply to the reader only:

• Where you are. Ads are served to visitors in the United States only. To know that, the reader asks an address on this domain for the country of your connection: it reads the two-letter code that Cloudflare attaches to every request and returns it, and keeps no log. If the answer is the United States, your browser stores that code in a functional cookie named gmn_geo for one hour, so the question is not asked on every page. Anywhere else, no cookie is written and no advertising code loads at all.
• Google’s own cookies. When an ad loads, Google and its partners may set or read advertising cookies and identifiers, as described in “How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services”. We ask Google for non-personalized ads for every visitor, without exception (see the next section).

Analytics and cookies

The App does not run third-party analytics trackers beyond the advertising provider (AdMob) described above.

This website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, the traffic statistics of the company that hosts it. It is cookie-free: it sets no cookie, stores nothing in your browser, does not fingerprint your device and does not follow you to other sites. What we get is aggregate: which pages are read, from which country, on which kind of browser, and how fast they load. Nothing in it identifies you. Cloudflare describes it at cloudflare.com/web-analytics.

Apart from that, the pages you read here (the home page, the blog, these notices) are static: no database, no forms, no other third-party script, no cookie, which is why you are never asked to accept anything to read them. The only code that runs on our side is the feed relay and the country lookup described above, both serving the reader at /app/, and the only cookie this site writes itself is the one-hour gmn_geo cookie, for visitors in the United States who open the reader.

Children

GetMyNews is intended for users aged 16 and older and is not directed to children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Advertising is configured for a general audience with content-rating and age controls enabled. If you believe a child has used the App, contact us and we will help.

Your California privacy rights (CCPA/CPRA)

We do not sell your personal information for money, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising except through the ad personalization you control via the consent prompt and your device settings (which you can turn off at any time). Because we hold no account and no server-side profile about you, most of your data lives only on your device.

You have the right to:

• know what personal information is collected and how it is used;
• delete your data — which, for on-device data, you do by clearing the App’s data or deleting the App;
• opt out of personalized advertising — using your device’s advertising settings (Settings → Google → Ads on Android); in the web reader, ads are already non-personalized for everyone (see Do Not Sell or Share above);
• not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

If you are in the EEA or UK (GDPR)

The controller is Smartness Home (France). We rely on your consentfor personalized advertising, and on our legitimate interest in providing a working, free product for the strict minimum needed to run it. You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (in France, the CNIL). Since your personalization data is stored on your device, you can exercise erasure directly by clearing the App’s data.

Data retention and security

On-device data remains until you delete it (clear the App’s data or uninstall). Keeping personalization local, with no central account database, minimizes exposure by design.
